Winter Warmth

Shepard's Pie
Snuggle In or Venture Out and Enjoy the Best Comfort Foods

When it’s cold outside, warm up with this season’s best fall foods. They are sure to make your temperature rise and warm your soul. Who doesn’t crave comfort foods this time of year?

Apple pie is a staple for this season. The fruit is ripe, the weather is cold, and there is nothing like a big piece of this American favorite to really make you feel like you should go rake your leaves. Add vanilla ice cream, and you have yourself an evening.

Done carving that pumpkin? Use what you would normally throw away and make a pumpkin pie! Pumpkins are essential for autumn, and when you are done carving it, roast the seeds and whip up a homemade, warm pie. These are delicious and extra comforting in the cold months to come.

Who doesn’t like a huge bowl of stew when the frost is just starting to form? Beef stew is a traditional fall meal that is easy to make, and sure to feed and please a family. Throw the ingredients in the crock-pot in the morning and enjoy the meal for days to follow.

When it’s not possible to fill your kitchen with the smell of homemade comfort, here are some ideas of where to go to let one of Rochester’s Chefs warm the cockles of your heart…

Nothing cures “baby it’s cold outside” such as a good Shepard’s pie, and Lento Restaurant has one that will certainly do the trick. Think braised duck, applewood smoked bacon and a Parmesan crust. Winter just got a whole lot warmer!

I don’t know about you, but when I’m feeling the need for some comfort, there’s nothing like macaroni and cheese to make me feel better. Add lobster to that and you have nothing short of heaven! Mario's Italian Steakhouse offers theirs with lobster, sweet cream, and asiago and Swiss cheeses. A much more sophisticated version than the blue box!

A night on the town can still involve some comfort, even on a cold Rochester winter’s eve when you’re all dressed up but would rather than sitting at home in your cozy flannel PJ’s. How about flattened gnocchi smothered in butter, roasted butternut squash, shitake mushrooms, spinach and Monterey Jack cheese? Tapas 177 allows you the best of both worlds.

Whether your plan is to spend the day in your kitchen, or an evening out is on the agenda, cozy fall food is in abundance everywhere this season. Comfort foods are best served warm, with a side of something sweet, and paired with someone you love to make you feel warm and be comforted with.
