Spring Fever. How To Capitalize On This Season's Trends Without Getting Burned
By now, you’ve probably flipped through at least a couple of fashion magazines to get a general idea of what Spring 2009 has in store for style. But trend-spotting in Hollywood and on the runways of New York, Paris, and Milan can lead to not only whiplash, but also a certain desperation for the average fashionista to look good season after season. Here’s how to pull it off without becoming a victim of fashion, or having your credit card statement make you look like a victim of identity theft.
Spring is supposed to be a time of renewal, and there’s nothing more exhilarating than shedding those heavy winter coats and sweaters, and slipping into more lightweight fabrics and brighter colors. The good news this season, although many people may not have realized it, is that some of the trends from Spring 2008 are being recast as this season’s hot new looks. For instance, gladiator sandals, safari looks, sheer fabrics, and floral prints are en vogue again, and yes, the one-shoulder goddess look is the silhouette for the second year in a row. So if you bought into these trends last year, lucky you -they’re back
So what is new? Here is a rundown on many of the other trends you’ll see this spring…
Sequins Not just for high glamour this time around, the point is to make this embellishment look as though you don’t even realize you’re wearing it. Once reserved for evening attire, sequins are showing up on tank tops, cardigan sweaters, ballet shoes and belts this time around. This relaxed approach makes it easy for anyone to get in on this trend, just make sure to keep the rest of your look simple and classic and you can pull this one off for daytime.
Metallics From fitted to fluid, fabrics in gold and silver are being seen everywhere and even incorporate textures and prints such as python and quilted patterns. Think you can’t wear this look? Why not try a metallic clutch or the ever so popular this season T-strap sandal? Just make sure to limit wearing these pieces to just one at a time.
Classic The trend that makes the trench coat a must-have. This season’s approach to classic has made black on white prints popular right now. Graphic, yet effortless, these pieces are so easily worn in a variety of ways, and look just right with many wardrobe staples you already have in your closet.
Other trends to take advantage of right now include:
Ruffles, from blouses to shoes, they add a fresh touch of femininity this season.
White pants, including denim, this is one piece that will give you endless wardrobe combinations for spring.
Pink, especially in shades of magenta and berry, think of “pink” as the new black.
Bold Jewelry and Bangles, to accent everything from safari to one-shouldered looks; oversized necklaces, bracelets and earrings in a variety of stones and metals are making quite a statement right now.
Neon and Acid colors, with a touch of these colors added to those graphic black and white prints, this nod to the 80’s will look stylish without having you search for those jelly bracelets.
Finally, Statement Shoes, bold sandals, dizzying heels, and endless straps all make for a finishing touch that will certainly make a statement on their own wherever you’re headed to this season
Perhaps the economy had something to do with the repeating of some of the trends from last year, but normally, most designers do not seem to give us a break when it comes to our desire to grab up what’s new each season. The important thing is to add these items to the classic, timeless pieces you should really invest in. The end result will always be a look that is updated and chic, the way spring should really make you feel.
