Two Finger Lakes Wineries are Top 100 Wineries in the World!

TOP 100 WINERIES in the world cited by Wines & Spirits magazine include Sheldrake Point Vineyard and Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, both in the Finger Lakes, in terms of quality. The top 100 included 35 American wineries, with the selections based on blind tastings of 3,767 wines. Sheldrak Point Vineyard and Herman J. Wiemer Vineyard recently poured their wines at a special celebration in San Francisco with other great wines from world-class producers like Roederer, Shafer, Joseph Drouhin, and Schloss Johannisberg. Congratulations to both, and thanks for carrying the New York flag.

Valvin Muscat Grape
Grape harvest keeps inching along, with cool cloudy weather in most regions slowing the ripening process, and some isolated near-freezing temperatures in some regions, but also clear signs of optimism.

This week’s Veraison to Harvest newsletter from Cornell Cooperative Extension says, “Growers and wineries (in the Finger Lakes) believe that the year is still shaping up to be a very good one for Riesling, which is good news”; and from Long Island, “Growers are very pleased to be able to deliver a decent crop of Chardonnay”. At Wednesday’s Long Island event in New York City, several wine makers like Christopher Tracy (Channing Daughters) and Rich Olsen-Harbich (Raphael) were very excited about the quality of this year’s crop, even though it will be smaller than usual.

Lake Ontario Wine Trail is New York’s newest, running along the southern shore of Lake Ontario from Oswego to Rochester, with five wineries, several other members (restaurants, B&B’s, farm markets, etc.) and more to come of both. The trail’s rack card offers free tastings at a member winery. For more information, visit their website or call 585-733-8366.
